Education - November 2001

The education committee met after our October general meeting at the Grape Leaf Diner to discuss options for Education Night. We have some ideas and are meeting again on November 7th to discuss them. The location is going to be at The Wyndham Hotel in the Ashley Room on Wednesday, February 13, 2002. This does take the place of our regular general meeting and will begin at 5:30 PM. More details will be forthcoming.

We have the beginnings of our Communicate with Confidence class. There are 6 members who are interested; Holly Wahl and Becky Stewart are joining together to instruct the class. Once the details are confirmed, I will advise the membership and everyone will be given a chance to join us before I order the manuals. The cost is $20.00. Thanks goes out to Holly and Becky for taking on this venture!!

For those of you who are new to IWOT, the Communicate with Confidence speak off is being held at the Ohio State Council meeting on November 10th in Canton, OH. A member must complete the CWC course before they can compete. A 3 minute prepared speech and a 1 minute impromtu will be required by each candidate. A CWC speak off must be held at the association level when there is more than one person who is interested in competing. The winner at this level will then go on to compete at the State level which is held in November at the Ohio State Council meeting. The winner at the State level will then go on to compete at the Regional level and from there the winner goes to the National level. It is very interesting to watch and even more exciting when someone from your association is participating. Our very own Becky Stewart will be attending the meeting and competing in the CWC speakoff. Becky, we know you will do great and will make our association proud! Let's all wish Becky the best of luck and even better, try to attend the State Council meeting and show Becky our support.

CPIA requirement changes - Beginning in 2002, the requirements for earning the CPIA designation will change dramatically. PIA is encouraging people to complete this designation this year, as next year, students will be required to pass an exam after each module Please go to www.ohiopia.com to get more information.

The Lima Insurance Women are sponsoring a CE class on December 4th, 2001; 8:30 AM until 12:00 PM at The American Mall Community Room in Lima, OH. This is a Commercial Package seminar that earns 3 CE credits and the cost is $25.00. The deadline for registration is November 16, 2001. The proceeds will be used to fund the Mary Ames Memorial Scholarship Award. This is a $500.00 scholarship that is awarded annually to those seeking a career in the insurance industry or seeking a professional designation. Please call me if you are interested in learning more about the CE seminar or the scholarship award.

The year 2001 ends the current 2 year compliance period which requires all licensed agents to obtain 20 hours of Continuing Education. If you are not in compliance yet, please visit the Hondros College, PIA or A.D. Banker websites to see what classes are still offered this year. I am listing some of those below.

Anyone who is interested in obtaining their CISR designation and needs CE credits has one more chance to do so. Safety - November 2001

Thanksgiving Safety

With fire-wise common sense, you can make sure tragedy does not come between you and the festive holiday you have planned. Follow these fire prevention tips to help you and your family have a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

- Keep your family and overnight guests safe with a working smoke detector on every level of the house, in every bedroom, and in the halls adjacent to the bedrooms. Test smoke detectors monthly and replace batteries at least twice a year.

- Overnight guests should be instructed on the fire escape plan and designated meeting place for your home.

- Have a fire extinguisher available not more than 10 feet from the stove, on the exit side of the room.

- A 2-1/2 lb. class ABC multi-purpose dry chemical extinguisher is recommended. Know how to use your fire extinguisher.

- Start holiday cooking with a clean stove and oven.

- Keep the kitchen off-limits to young children and adults that are not helping with food preparations to lessen the possibility of kitchen
mishaps.

- When cooking, do not wear clothing with loose sleeves or dangling jewelry. The clothing can catch on fire and the jewelry can catch on pot handles, causing spills and burns.

- Cook on the back burners when possible and turn pot handles in so they don't extend over the edge of the stove.

- Never leave cooking unattended. If you must leave the kitchen while cooking, turn off the stove or have someone else watch what is being
cooked. Unattended cooking is the #1 cause of home fires.

- Keep Thanksgiving decorations and kitchen clutter away from sources of direct heat.

- Candles are often part of holiday decorations. Candles should never be left burning when you are away from home, or after going to bed. Candles
should be located where children will not be tempted to play with them, and where guests will not accidentally brush against them. The candle
holder should be completely noncombustible and difficult to knock over. The candle should not have combustible decorations around it.

- If smoking is allowed inside, provide guests with large, deep ashtrays and check them frequently. After guests leave, check inside and under upholstery and in trashcans for cigarette butts that may be smoldering.

Community Service - November 2001

Additional information for the Community Service Bulletin for November

I would like to invite everyone to participate in our December project. Our
committee is very excited to participate in this event. We are collecting
used or new mittens, gloves, socks, coats, blankets to have distributed to
the homeless during the Christmas Week. This is not through any organized charity or groups. The items will actually be donated to people out on the streets. If you are interested in donating, please bring your items to the December IWOT meeting. We will even take items such as be UNmatched gloves or socks. We appreciate any donation possible and are very excited for the difference we may make for a deprived person this Holiday Season.

I would like to thank everyone for the contributions donated at the October meeting. We were able to donate 2 bags of goodies and $62 from our Toledo IWOT group. This donation went to the Women In Touch with Children in Hospitals program for Halloween goodie bags to those children not able to go out and trick or treat. The hospitals which will be visited are St. Charles and St. Vincents. Karen Gorden would like to extend her thank you to our group on behalf of the W.I.T.C.H. program.
